He blogs right here Muslims account for over twenty percent of the population of the world and more than that fraction of prime-aged girls. For religious and cultural reasons these girls tend to be quite inaccessible to outsiders and often have their romantic and sexual choices restricted or simply made on their behalf. A high proportion of Muslim girls, families, and communities take religious and cultural practices and rules seriously. These practices include an outright ban on romantic and sexual contact with non-Muslim men. That makes them a difficult, but not impossible challenge for an outsider.

Lou Everett was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses for more than 14 years. During that time, he served as a full-time minister as well as other major roles within the congregation. Lou’s journey to the Catholic Church was truly a rough road traveled. From Jehovah’s Witnesses to Catholicism: My Journey In , I find myself inside a Catholic church for midnight mass.

My future wife, born and raised in the Catholic Church, by my side; silently showing me something that I never thought I’d see or feel. At the age of 31, a realization set in that I never would have expected to occur — thus begins another part of my journey to the Church, my home. Peering back into my childhood, I realize that my journey actually began as a child. My father was in the military so our family traveled around quite a bit. I was born in San Francisco, California while my father was stationed there in the Army in Both of my parents are ‘cradle’ Catholics and had very different experiences with the Catholic Church.

Throughout the various moves from place to place, my parents were contacted by Jehovah’s Witnesses. Their message seemed to touch my parents enough to eventually become baptized in as Jehovah’s Witnesses.

They claim to be Christian but the vast majority reject Christ Blood and flesh and they do this in a ritualistic fashion every memorial of Christ death by passing the bread and wine among themselves and not eating it. Each local “class” or ecclesia came to recognize him as “Pastor,” although geography and Russell’s writing and publishing activities prevented more than an occasional pastoral visit in person. Inevitably, Russell’s increasingly divergent teachings forced his followers to separate from other church bodies and to create a denomination of their own. Beginning, as he did, in a small branch of Adventism that went to the extreme of setting specific dates for the return of Christ and the Rapture, Russell went farther out on a limb in by openly rejecting the doctrine of the Trinity.

His earlier mentor Nelson H. The writings of Barbour and Paton that Russell had helped publish or distribute were Trinitarian in their theology. And the Watch Tower itself was at first vague and noncommittal on the subject.

Within the Jehovah’s Witness faith and some other Christian faiths, courtship is preferred over dating. Courtship is dating someone with the intention to marry. Because of this, it is not recommended for people to date until they are of marrying age, and then they should only date someone who shares their faith, values and intent for the relationship.

Sitting in the Kingdom Hall as a young child, I would hear talks about sex, but they were, for the most part, warnings about what not to do—what was moral and what was not— but mostly not. Masturbation was wrong, mutual masturbation was wrong, and both oral and anal sex were wrong. So I promised myself that as soon I found out what the heck they were, I would never do them.

As I grew up, I came to understand what sex is really all about, according to Watchtower teachings. I also heard from the platform and from people at the Hall how it was not good for a man to be alone; that he needed a wife to satisfy his sexual needs. I divorced my husband for spousal abuse at the age of twenty-two. All I knew was that men wanted and needed sex.

In my late twenties I started rebuilding my life.

Things Jehovah’s Witnesses Can’t Do.

Links Member Beliefs A testimony is a reliable method to learn the truth. Men can deceive, science can be wrong but a true testimony is an undeniable way to establish the truth of the gospel. A testimony of the Book of Mormon can be gained by reading the Book of Mormon and putting the book to the test by praying about whether or not it is true: A true testimony comes from the Holy Ghost and cannot be denied. Although the Book of Mormon does not say how exactly the Holy Ghost will manifest the truth to people, many LDS believe it is either a physical sensation such as the burning in the bosom or just an intense feeling that it is true.

He also told David Nye White, senior editor of the Pennsylvania’s Pittsburg Weekly Gazette, on August 28 that speaking to Joseph Smith about revelations, “he stated that when he was in a ‘quandary,’ he asked the Lord for a revelation, and when he could not get it, he ‘followed the dictates of his own judgment, which were as good as a revelation to him; but he never gave anything to his people as revelation, unless it was a revelation, and the Lord did reveal himself to him.

It may seem an odd subject, but not as odd as children growing up without father figures in their lives. This is not as simple as it seems. Give it some thought. I am very interested in your replies. Polygamy Treatise Although overt polygamy is rare in the United States, it is common around the world. Although the number of males and females are approximately equal at birth, in many societies, including the United States, these ratios are not equal at the time they join the marriage pool. In some societies many males die off by disease, murder and warfare. In many societies large proportions of males leave smaller towns to move into larger cities leaving behind a substantial excess of women.

The reality is that monogamy is not the norm among human society.

Volume 21, Issue 7 , October , Pages A social cognitive perspective on religious beliefs: Psychological theories about social and cognitive processes can help mental-health professionals better understand the function of religious beliefs in coping and their role in therapy. Religious individuals are likely to use heuristics to form rapid judgments rather than engage in formal information-gathering processes.

Religious beliefs provide order and understanding to an otherwise chaotic and unpredictable world. Many religions advocate forgiveness, which is often helpful in resolving conflicts. Another beneficial religious belief is an ever-present spiritual attachment figure. Negative effects of religion include its exercising aversive control to maintain conformity and its promoting an external locus of control. In contrast, mental-health professionals belong to a tradition of free inquiry and self-development, and guide clients to acquire competencies necessary to change and direct their lives.

The Rules. What Jehovah’s Witnesses Believe. Right or wrong, Jehovah’s Witnesses are expected to obey all the rules. They are required to believe the Watchtower .

In general, their beliefs would be almost indistinguishable from those of most modern Christians. Certainly, their beliefs would seem unremarkable to most people in the western world. Certainly too, ordinary Cathars and ordinary Catholics in the Languedoc got on together perfectly well before the Crusades. Ordinary Cathar believers behaved much like anyone else at the time, they contracted marriages, had children, ate meat, fought in wars, and followed the Ten Commandments when it suited them.

The distinguishing feature was that they undertook to undergo a special ceremony called the Consolamentum before their death. They generally deferred this rite until they were on their deathbeds, just as early Christians normally deferred baptism until they were on theirs. This rite ensured that their soul would be released from the cycle of earthly imprisonment. Instead it would be free to return to the realm of light. Although undergoing the Consolamentum before their death was the only obligation on them, adherents of the sect seem to have led more ascetic lives than their conventional Catholic neighbours.

They made serious efforts to follow not only the Ten Commandments especially about killing and lying but other biblical injunctions for example not swearing oaths in any circumstances. They kept three Lents each year, and fasted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays of each week. During these fasts a diet of bread and water was usual.

Believers would also engage in a regular form of public confession which, they were taught, dated from the earliest days of Christianity. Some believers chose to undertake the Consolamentum before the prospect of death loomed.
