People often make the mistake of citing the American or European importer as the ‘maker’ of the guitar, when in fact several Japanese manufacturers were producing badged guitars out of their plants and shipping them to America and Europe to sell. Japanese manufacturers made multiple badges at the same plant, many of whom resemble each other closely. Some manufacturers merged or changed hands over the years which added to the confusion, sometime merging with another maker, only to pick up their name later.

Tonally, you’re in for a dry and earthy tone that’ll fit nicely into band mixes. With its smaller body size, it works exceptionally well for finger-style playing — offering rich harmonic content across the fretboard. The sound is focused and crisp, meaning intricate details of your playing won’t become lost, as is the case with larger dreadnought-style models. While at first the tone of this guitar might seem a little flat, after a couple of hours of acclimatisation it begins to sing.

The smaller body size also offers a level of natural compression too, which means you can play more dynamically at lower volumes as well as digging in harder for strumming. There’s a great amount of projection here when needed, making this a fantastic all-rounder. Many of the hallmarks of acoustic playing, such as open tunings and drop-D work exceptionally well — coming across resonant and lush.

Far from the glossy, metallic sound of many contemporary acoustics, this makes a fine choice for anyone looking for the rounded and warm tones of yesteryear.

In accountancy, depreciation refers to two aspects of the same concept: Businesses depreciate long-term assets for both tax and accounting purposes. The former affects the balance sheet of a business or entity, and the latter affects the net income that they report. Generally the cost is allocated, as depreciation expense, among the periods in which the asset is expected to be used. This expense is recognized by businesses for financial reporting and tax purposes.

Methods of computing depreciation, and the periods over which assets are depreciated, may vary between asset types within the same business and may vary for tax purposes. These may be specified by law or accounting standards, which may vary by country. There are several standard methods of computing depreciation expense, including fixed percentage, straight line, and declining balance methods.

The Larson Brothers were among those who supplied Wulschner, and although such instruments are uncommonly rare, a small handful are known to exist. We have labeled the instrument pictured here a Style 6, which is the closest Stahl equivalent we could suggest. Built of Brazilian Rosewood and tight-grained Red Spruce, this regal is a fairly ornate guitar.

The guitar’s top is bordered with multicolored wooden purflings and has a matching rosette; pearl inlay grace the fingerboard, headstock, and bridge; the back’s center-strip is of the same purfling stock that decorates the top, and the entire instrument is bound in white celluloid. For a turn of the century instrument, this guitar has a quite modern feel. The frets are original, and although quite small, the guitar is well set up and plays very nicely with low action.

The combination of a deep body and transverse bracing make for an instrument with a throaty bark and distinct trebles, and the Larson radiused top adds power and headroom. Yes, it’s a fine sounding guitar. Most century old guitars have seen some amount of repairwork, and this Larson has had its share. Most importantly, its top is in excellent shape, the finish is original, and the neck angle is good.

The back has two long spliced cracks down the center, and the sides show repaired hairline cracks on either side of the endpin. The top has a well repaired crack about 3″ long from the bottom towards the bridge, another similar and barely visible crack is located 1. The top’s bracing, bridge, and plate are all intact and in fine shape, and extra support has been added under the fingerboard to create extra stability to that area.

Two back braces have been reglued, the neck was at some point reset, and – most recently by Folkway – the saddle slot was repositioned for correct intonation, new bone saddle and bridge pins were installed, the frets were dressed, and the original nut was adjusted.
